Grand Theft Auto – Pushing the Envelope

Grand Theft Auto is both famous and infamous. Which one is more prevalent? That depends on who you talk to. Many gamers feel that this series has broken new ground for the video game industry and flat out love these games. Political figures and parents are usually disgusted and outraged by what they “hear” is in the games. The first game was released in 1997 and was well received. However, the series didn’t really take off until 2001’s Grand Theft Auto III. Since then the series has sold millions of games and had many sequels and expansions.

Grand Theft Auto started on Sony PlayStation. It can now be played on everything from Xbox 360 to Nintendo DS. The demand for these games has exceeded any exclusivity deals with certain console makers. This commercial success has drawn the attention of the media and politicians.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas caused a ton of controversy in 2005 with the famous “hot coffee” incident. A modder released a patch for the game so gamers could engage in a sexual intercourse mini-game. The game involved fully-clothed characters and clearly wasn’t made by Rockstar North. However, this didn’t stop the politicians and parent groups from freaking out. The game was recalled and Rockstar had to release a new version of the game that prevented this modification.

This series has also pushed the envelope with violence. Grand Theft Auto is known for popularizing the sandbox game genre. These games allow the user to partake in side-quests and run around the city doing whatever he or she pleases. This includes shooting civilians and bludgeoning them with objects. This has been a hot topic for those who think video games need to be restricted and censored. Many have fought against this stating that it is just as fictional as a horror film or a television show. They have also argued that it is an art form and it should not be censored.

Grand Theft Auto has also pushed the envelope in many positive ways for gaming. It has helped increase video game console and software sales dramatically. These games have helped define what kind of replay value should be present in a game. Many Hollywood actors have leant their voices to various iterations of the game. These actors have included Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds and Tom Sizemore, among others. Starting with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, these games have been known for their eclectic and comprehensive soundtracks that are specific to a certain time period.

This line of games has become one of the hottest commodities in the industry. They have helped video games reach a new level of popularity. Grand Theft Auto is very much a part of popular culture. It is not simply a product. For many, it is a rebellious statement against those who dislike video games. To them it is like giving a big middle finger to the establishment. Regardless of what the intentions were when this series first launched, it is definitely clear that controversy does create cash.

Newest Grand Theft Auto Games

As soon as news of a new Grand Theft Auto Game became reality and the San Andreas edition finally became available on the market the world of Internet car games changed for good.

The new Grand Theft Auto game, San Andreas, was released on the market in its PS2 version in late 2004 in North America, Europe and Australia and in early 2007 in Japan. The Xbox and Windows versions were released in 2005. Although it is similar in structure to the previous Grand Theft Auto game, the San Andreas is larger than life in possibilities. The game now covers a whole state consisting of three different cities: Los Santos which corresponds to Los Angeles, Las Venturas modeled after Las Vegas and San Fierro which is the virtual equivalent of San Francisco in this new Grand Theft Auto game.

The characters can now walk, jump, run, climb as well as swim and there is a much wider list of weapons available to the player. Now that the potential for violence and crime has been raised considerably the authorities are more specialized: the minor infractions are still handled by the police, but when a crime is committed the military, the FBI and the SWAT teams take over. The list of vehicles that you can use seems endless. From sports cars to trucks, limousines and tanks, busses, coaches, helicopters or airplanes, you will certainly fin your favorite means of transportation here.

The beauty of the new Grand Theft Auto game is that a player can choose to simply disregard the missions and just go driving around the city, swimming in the ocean or flying a helicopter. This pleasure cruise, however, will not help him advance to the next level of difficulty of the game or earn him any points. In addition to the missions, this Grand Theft Auto game also offers numerous minigames that you can play at your leisure: pool, basketball, video games and even gambling.

Complete with amazing graphics, this new Grand Theft Auto game is sure to provide you with countless hours of wicked fun.

Grand Theft Auto IV Review

Few game franchises are as recognized and as successful as the Grand Theft Auto series. Ever since Grand Theft Auto 3 was released for the PlayStation 2, Rockstar has changed the face of gaming. Grand Theft Auto is a game that is synonymous with both controversy and fun. Rockstar proved itself to be capable of releasing hit after hit, which was shown after they released Vice City and San Andreas games that took Grand Theft Auto 3 and added so much more content. After selling more than 20 million copies of the Grand Theft Auto games, when GTA IV was announced for release in 2008, there was much excitement. Even now, years after it has been released, Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games for the PlayStation 3.

Graphics, Sound and Setting:

Grand Theft Auto IV returns to Liberty City, the place where GTA3 took place. Liberty City is based on New York City, and as soon as you start playing the game, it’s evident that Rockstar really made the effort to make the city as realistic as possible. There are many places in the game that look almost exactly like New York City, and the game has a great authentic environment. Even a few years after the game was released, it’s still one of the best games for immersing you in a truly interactive setting. The sound quality in GTA IV is alright, there are a variety of sounds you can hear. The gun sounds are realistic, and the voice acting is solid. I would’ve enjoyed more music, because unless you put on a radio station there isn’t very much music in GTA IV.

The game’s story is centered around Nike Bellic, a former soldier from Eastern Europe, who comes to the United States to achieve the “American dream”. Niko’s cousin Roman has come to the United States earlier, and he tells Niko stories of wealth, woman, and success. This inspires Niko to come, but when he arrives he finds out things aren’t quite as they seem

The story in GTA IV is much deeper than it was in the previous games. You can genuinely feel the emotion of Niko when he goes through hard times. The characters are much more three dimensional and realistic. The cut scenes perfectly mix humor and story together. There are also plenty of plot twists and turns to keep you entertained and guessing. The story is definitely GTA IV’s strongest attribute. However, the story also can feel different from the other games at times. Where the other games used lots of humor, GTA IV is more serious in comparison. However, that’s not to say there aren’t any funny moments in this game. In fact, like other Grand Theft Auto games, there are a ton of moments that will have you cracking up. GTA has a great collection of interesting and unique characters.

Controls and Gameplay:

The controls in GTA IV are, for the most part, the same as the ones in the previous games. You can press triangle and steal a car, you have the ability to jump over ledges and climb things. You can punch and take out weapons and aim and fire them. However, GTA IV introduces some new elements into the mix.

The biggest change is the cover system. In GTA IV you have the ability to take cover behind objects. This is both useful and annoying. The cover system can make firefights feel more realistic and adds strategy to what would otherwise just be shoot, run, shoot. But the problem is taking cover in places where you don’t want to. Many times in the game, I ended up taking cover right next to the enemies. I feel that the cover system is a great addition, but Rockstar could have done so much more with it.

The game uses the same mission system as the previous games. Basically, within the city there are people that assign missions that you can complete. These missions give you access to something new, such as a new safehouse. However, they mainly serve to progress the story. GTA IV is a wide open game, where you can choose to spend your time doing missions or you can just go out and cause chaos. You can literally do anything you want in this game, it’s extremely fun to just steal a car and go cruising down the streets at times. The gameplay can get bland at times, the missions start to become repetitive sometimes. I understand Rockstar needed some filler missions to fill in gaps in the story, but killing person A, or escorting item x from point a to point b can become repetitive. Overall, though the gameplay is impressive and holds the standard quality of the other Grand Theft Auto games well.

Rent or Buy? Final Thoughts:

Grand Theft Auto IV is still an amazing game even years after it was released. The dynamic environment, gripping story, and exciting gameplay all make this a game that’s well worth the $20 it costs nowadays. Overall, I’d highly recommend buying this game, and I give it a 8/10.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is an action-adventure sandbox style action adventure computer and video game, produce by Rockstar North. It is the third 3D video game in the Grand Theft Auto Video game series.

This game was originally release for the PlayStation 2 in October 2004, the game has since been ported to the Xbox and Microsoft Windows, and has received wide acclaim and very high sales figures on all of the afore mention platforms. Sand Andreas was preceded by Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and is succeeded by Grand Theft Auto IV.

The game revolves around the main character Carl “CJ” Johnson returning home from the Liberty City to Los Santos after learning of his mother’s murder. CJ finds his family and his old gang, the Grove Street Families, in disarray. Over the Over the course of the game, CJ gradually unravels the plot behind his mother’s murder while reestablishing his gang and exploring his own business ventures.
Like the previous entries inn the Grand Theft Auto Series, San Andreas’s critical and commercial success has not been without controversy. Most notably being over the explicit” hot Coffee” sex minigame, which was disabled but left within the game’s code. This discovery led San Andreas to be re- rated for a short time as an adult game and thus it was pulled from the shelves.

Grand Theft Auto IV is structured similarly to previous games in the series. The core game play consists of elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game, affording the player a large, open environment in which to move around.

On foot, the player’s character is capable of walking, running, swimming, climbing and jumping, as well as utilizing weapons and basic hand to hand combat. Players can steal and drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats, helicopters, and motorcycles. So that’s a brief on PlayStation 3 newest video game so enjoy.
